What do you seek?

The daily reading today came from John 6:22-29. The crowd that Jesus had just fed through His miracle of the multiplication of loaves noticed that Him and His disciples were gone, so they got on boats to find Him. Jesus tells them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” (John 6:26-27).

What do you seek?

Fame. Fortune. Success. Beauty. Popularity. Leisure. Travel. Power. These are but a few examples of the "food that perishes." There are countless billboards and commercials claiming that if you purchase or attain______, you will be happier, fitter, more attractive, more lovable, the envy of all, and other such promises. Although we at first feel happy upon purchasing these things or attaining these goals, our happiness just doesn't seem to ever last.

Stars like Elvis Presley had it all, but many of them were still left...unsatisfied. Many, like Elvis, sought out drugs. Others, sought relationships. Some immersed themselves in work and attaining things that they thought would make them happy. When we seek food that perishes, however, we can expect the happiness to fade and the "perishable food" to possibly even leave us emptier than when we first consumed it (I.e., drugs, unhealthy relationships)!

What do you seek?

The crowd that followed Jesus came to Him, because they were fed and filled by Him. They sought Jesus! He is the only One who can truly quench our thirst and feed our souls. He is the only One who can bring us joy that truly lasts. He is the only One who can fill our emptiness and replace it with His Divine Love!

People who sought Jesus desired healing, forgiveness, understanding, love, Truth, and still more. They were not afraid to be vulnerable with Him and pour out their needs and struggles to Him. They brought their intentions to Jesus, and through their faith, they were given what they sought for.

What do you seek?

Ask God now what it is you are searching for. Tell Him your struggles. Tell Him your joys. Tell Him what you are seeking. He hears you, and He alone will fill you!
